17TH World Congress on Road Winter Service, Resilience and Decarbonisation - Pre-proceedings of the Congress

Resilience Session 10 - Rural Roads Resilience

Friday, March 13 09:30 - 11:00
Chair: Imen Makhlouf, Chair of PIARC TC2.2, Tunisia
Room: Room 2

Rural roads are essential lifelines in low- and middle-income countries. They enable mobility between communities, provide access to markets, education, and health services, and support the transport of agricultural goods to urban centers. Their role in food security, social inclusion, and local economic integration remains fundamental.
Yet, climate change is increasingly undermining their sustainability. More intense rainfall, flooding, drought, erosion, slope failures, and rising temperatures are weakening pavement structures and interrupting rural accessibility. These disruptions directly affect daily life, economic productivity, and regional development.
This session focuses on innovative materials, construction techniques, digital tools aimed at strengthening rural road resilience.
